Autism Root Causes: Birth Trauma, Vagus Nerve Dysfunction, and the Perfect Storm Framework

Episode 6, Experience Miracles Podcast | Host: Dr. Tony Ebel, DC, CACCP, Pediatric Chiropractor & Founder of PX Docs | Published: February 6, 2024 | Duration: 65 min

Key Takeaways

  • Autism prevalence has risen from 1 in 3,500 to 1 in 36, a shift that cannot be explained by better diagnosis alone. Dr. Tony Ebel argues the real driver is a compounding sequence of neurological stressors during the most critical windows of a child’s development.
  • Epigenetics, not genetic predetermination, governs how autism develops. A child may carry a genetic predisposition, but the environment during sensitive developmental periods determines whether and how that predisposition is expressed.
  • Birth trauma (forceps, vacuum extraction, C-sections, and induction) injures the Brainstem and Vagus Nerve and appears in 85–90% of Dr. Ebel’s autism cases clinically. It is, by his assessment, the single biggest missing link in most autism treatment plans, bigger than gut health, bigger than genetics, bigger than motor development, because the nervous system controls all of those.
  • The Vagus Nerve does far more than most parents realize: it regulates inflammation, gut function, immunity, socialization, speech, and emotional regulation. For many children with autism, the vagus nerve wasn’t just damaged, it was never fully developed in the first place, which is why anti-inflammatory diets alone often fail to resolve chronic gut inflammation.
  • The order in which a child developed autism is the order in which healing must occur. Families doing the right things, gut protocols, PT/OT, dietary changes, but doing them all at once or out of sequence often plateau because they’ve skipped the foundational step: restoring nervous system balance through Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care.

What Really Causes Autism, and Why So Many Children Stay Stuck

Autism is not a single-cause condition. It is the result of what Dr. Tony Ebel, DC, CACCP, calls The Perfect Storm, a sequence of compounding stressors that overwhelm a child’s nervous system during the most sensitive periods of neurological development. Those stressors arrive in a specific chronological order: maternal distress during pregnancy, birth trauma at delivery, and early exposure to antibiotics and environmental toxins in the first years of life.

What makes The Perfect Storm framework different from most autism conversations is the emphasis on sequence. The body develops neurologically in a specific order. When it is knocked off that track, healing must follow the same sequence in reverse, foundational first. That means addressing the Autonomic Nervous System and Vagus Nerve dysfunction at the root before gut healing, immune recovery, or developmental catch-up can fully take hold.

For parents who have gone deep into natural health, the diets, the detoxes, the therapies, and still feel like their child is stuck, the answer is almost always that the foundational neurological piece has not been addressed. The nervous system was dysregulated before the toxins ever arrived. That’s where the work has to start.

Why Dr. Tony Ebel Studies Autism, and What He Found [0:00 – 7:27]

Dr. Tony Ebel: Autism was the first condition I really committed my career to serving and helping. When I say studying, I don’t mean perusing what others are saying. I mean I read every study about genetics, every study about maternal distress and fertility and birth trauma and antibiotics and all the things you’re going to learn today. I went onto every board, in every organization, in every conference and seminar and expert I could get to.

I spent the last 16 years sitting knee to knee with parents again and again and again, listening intently to each child’s story so we could find the clues, find the triggers, find the patterns, and find the real root causes.

When you get online and see the CDC saying autism is 1 in 36, they just present it as a negative outcome. I have a love-frustration relationship with my job in that spot, because what I’m about to teach you, I wish I didn’t need to.

When a family gets that diagnosis and then gets to work, and autism parents do this bigger, better, and more consistently than anyone, you end up having to look backward to go forward. That’s The Perfect Storm. We have to find the root causes and the triggers and identify them so we can address them.

“Autism parents, I have found, do bigger, better, more consistently than anything else. You end up having to look backwards to go forward.”

My deep dive into autism is really a deep dive into the multifactorial root causes. And the subtitle, if there is one, is: including the root cause that no one else talks about. Not just contrasting this conversation with what you’d get at a pediatrician’s office. I mean deeper than even what you’d get in the natural, functional, integrative world. The foundational one. The one you may be missing.

Genetics vs. Epigenetics: Your Child’s Future Is Not Predetermined [7:27 – 18:33]

There is a critical difference between the words genetic predisposition and genetic predetermination. My undergraduate degree was in genetics and molecular biology, and I want you to hear this clearly: true genetic disorders involve chromosomal deletions, Down syndrome, trisomy 18. Those are genetic in the strictest sense. Autism is not in that category.

Epigenetics tells us something very different. We are massively able to influence our genetic outcome based on the environment we put ourselves and our children in. That influence is most powerful during what are called the sensitive and critical developmental windows, in utero, at birth, and in the first weeks, months, and years of life.

The analogy I always give: if you’ve ever played cards, traditional medicine wants you to believe the hand you’re dealt is fixed. That your child’s neurological outcome was predetermined at conception and nothing can change it. Science has disproven that massively.

“There is a significant difference between genetic predisposition and genetic predetermination. Science has disproven genetic determinism massively.”

The traditional world has made progress here, they’re now saying it’s a combination of genetic influence and environmental factors. But they don’t open the hood on the environmental conversation. They don’t go into pregnancy, labor, delivery, or early childhood toxin exposure. That’s exactly where we’re going.

So we know it’s not simply genetic. We know autism is not a single factor. What it is, is The Perfect Storm.

The Perfect Storm and the Three Ts [18:33 – 27:27]

The Perfect Storm is a sequence or series of stressors that a child’s central nervous system is exposed to early and often during the most sensitive critical periods of neurodevelopment. From conception through embryonic development, labor and delivery, and the first weeks, months, and years of life, these are the crucial windows. When they are thrown off track by stress, the earlier and more significantly they’re disrupted, the further a child is sent down the road toward an autism diagnosis.

Think of it as not a singular factor, but a multifactorial condition that compounds. And the most important thing to understand, the thing few practitioners address even on the natural integrative side, is the sequence or order with which the body got out of balance.

The order in which your child got sick is the order in which we need to help them heal.

There are two sets of three that frame everything with autism. The first set is The Three Ts: the three types of stressors. Physical stress, chemical stress, and emotional stress, Traumas, Toxins, and Thoughts. When children with autism are exposed to all three, or even one or two of them significantly, early and often during in utero development, birth, and the first one to three years of life, their nervous system’s adaptive capacity gets overwhelmed.

God designed our kids to handle toxins, handle a virus, develop and grow. But if that stress comes too much, too early, it overwhelms their resiliency. It shifts their nervous system into fight-or-flight Sympathetic Dominance, which we’ll break down in detail in the back half of this episode.

“Too much of a good thing is actually overwhelming a child who’s already overwhelmed and stuck in sympathetic fight-or-flight overdrive.”

The second set of three is the specific sequence of The Perfect Storm, three ingredients that, based on thousands of case histories, cause the most trouble. Let’s go there.

The Three Perfect Storm Triggers: Maternal Distress, Birth Trauma, and Toxins [27:27 – 37:27]

Ingredient Number One: Maternal Distress

The most common Perfect Storm ingredient, appearing in 60 to 80% of our cases, is what the research calls prenatal or maternal distress. A high-risk, high-stress, high-anxiety pregnancy. A mom whose nervous system was stuck in sympathetic fight-or-flight throughout fertility and pregnancy.

Here’s how it works: that umbilical cord is not just a nutrient pathway. It’s also the power cord. It is the electrical connection between mom’s nervous system and baby’s developing nervous system. Mom’s nervous system sets the tone, the wiring, and the setting of baby’s nervous system. When all mom knows during pregnancy is stress, tension, anxiety, and exhaustion, that maternal distress is shared directly with baby through the umbilical cord.

In today’s world, we have medicalized pregnancy to a degree that has actually disempowered moms and piled on more neurological stress than ever before. More anxiety, more depression, more overscheduled, more overburdened, and it all travels through that cord.

Ingredient Number Two: Birth Trauma

“Birth trauma, birth intervention is the single biggest missing link by far. It’s not even close.”

Birth trauma appears in 85 to 90% or more of the children I’ve seen with autism clinically, and that is thousands of cases. The other word for birth trauma is birth intervention or birth augmentation: forceps, vacuum extraction, C-sections, emergency C-sections, induction.

The upper neck is the intersection between the brain and the spinal cord. The Brainstem is the air traffic control center for the entire autonomic nervous system. Think about how we respond to a football player who takes a head or neck injury, that’s where we fear the worst neurological outcomes.

Now consider that millions of children are being pulled into this world by their head and neck, with forceps or vacuum extractors, while their neck musculature has never had to work against gravity. If we physically traumatically injure that neurological tissue, why would we expect their neurological outcomes to be okay?

Birth trauma to the brainstem and vagus nerve is a bigger deal than the microbiome. It’s a bigger deal than gross motor function. It’s a bigger deal than genetics. Because the nervous system controls all of those things.

Ingredient Number Three: Early Antibiotics and Toxins

The third ingredient, early exposure to antibiotics, medications, and environmental toxins like Prevacid, Prilosec, MiraLax, and others ingested, injected, or inhaled, compounds what the first two stressors have already done to the nervous system.

Notice that this is also a chronological list of the child’s life. Maternal distress first. Birth trauma second. Early toxin exposure third. And that sequence matters deeply for how we address healing.

If a child suffered a physically traumatic birth, forceps, vacuum, C-section, induction, and it created what’s called Subluxation and Dysautonomia, that needs to be found and addressed neurologically before gut healing can happen in full, before brain healing can happen in full, before development can get back on track.

The Vagus Nerve: Why Birth Trauma Goes Deeper Than Most Realize [37:27 – 48:35]

The Vagus Nerve is a cranial nerve that branches from the brainstem and travels down through the neck, abdomen, and thorax, that’s why it’s called the wandering nerve. It is in charge of rest-and-digest regulation. We now know it also governs socialization, emotional and behavioral regulation, speech and communication, and the anti-inflammatory response.

A peer-reviewed paper, A Review on the Vagus Nerve and Autonomic Nervous System During Fetal Development: Searching for Critical Windows, is the most complete scientific documentation of The Perfect Storm I’ve read. It states that several studies have shown how the vagus nerve is involved in vital processes during fetal, perinatal, and postnatal life, from regulating inflammation through the anti-inflammatory cholinergic pathway, to influencing every organ system in the body.

“The vagus nerve has been recognized as the primary sensory pathway capable of transmitting information to the brain from every organ of the body.”

Here is the clinical aha moment for autism families who have tried everything on the gut and inflammation side: nearly every child with autism struggles massively with gut health and chronic inflammation, constantly constipated, constantly bloated, constantly inflamed. And this often continues even after parents have removed gluten, casein, and all environmental allergens.

The reason is the vagus nerve. You need a functioning vagus nerve to activate the anti-inflammatory pathways that regulate the gut. If that nerve is damaged or, in many cases, never fully developed, no amount of dietary intervention alone will resolve the inflammation.

What we now understand at the deepest level of this Perfect Storm scientific theory is this: vagus nerve dysfunction in autism isn’t just from a damaged vagus nerve. For many of these children, it’s a massively underdeveloped autonomic vagus nerve system that never turned on in the first place.

The paper also introduced the concept of using HRV (Heart Rate Variability) to identify critical developmental windows where vagus nerve maturation can be monitored, both prenatally and postnatally. This is precisely the technology we use in PX Docs offices: measuring, quantifying, and locating nervous system dysfunction through INSiGHT Scans so we can address it directly.

Three Neurological Consequences: Subluxation, Delays, and Exhaustion [48:35 – 56:25]

When a child goes through The Perfect Storm, all three Ts, all three triggers, early and often during sensitive developmental windows, here is what happens to the nervous system. Three consequences, in sequence.

Consequence One: Subluxation and Sympathetic Dominance

The nervous system shifts into Sympathetic Dominance, fight-or-flight overdrive, and gets stuck there. The gas pedal is on and won’t turn off. This state is called Subluxation in our framework: stress stuck on the sympathetic nervous system, which simultaneously suppresses the vagus nerve and the entire parasympathetic rest-regulation, detoxification, anti-inflammatory, social-emotional-behavioral-speech branch of the nervous system.

For many children, the vagus nerve didn’t just get suppressed. It never developed. It never turned on. It never got activated in the first place.

Consequence Two: Neurodevelopmental Delays

As Dr. Bruce Lipton, one of the pioneers in epigenetics, has noted: you cannot be in growth and protection at the same time. A nervous system stuck in sympathetic dominance cannot simultaneously be in growth and development mode.

Once a child is subluxated and stuck in dysautonomia and sympathetic dominance, their whole developmental track is thrown off, gross motor development on the outside, and digestion, immune function, endocrine function, and metabolic development on the inside. This is the path toward the neurodevelopmental delays that lead to an autism diagnosis.

“The order in which your child got sick is the order in which we need to help them heal.”

Consequence Three: Neurological Exhaustion

The third consequence, and the one we see clinically more today than ever before, is neurological exhaustion. These are the children whose nervous systems have gone so far into sympathetic overdrive that the system is flat out worn out. Adrenals shut down. Metabolism shuts down. No matter how many healing mechanisms, natural or otherwise, are thrown at them, they cannot respond.

These are the intensive cases. The families who have tried everything medically and naturally and in movement-based therapy, and have seen limited gains, or continue to plateau or regress. If your child is completely stuck, completely plateaued, or continuing to regress, their nervous system has likely reached this third stage of subluxation and dysautonomia where they are simply exhausted.

The Missing Piece: Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care [56:25 – 1:04:14]

Here is the single most potent thing that is foundationally missing from getting most children with autism to heal: Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic adjustments.

This is not standard chiropractic care for back pain or neck pain. This is not even general pediatric wellness chiropractic. This is a specific clinical approach designed to locate, measure, and address subluxation and dysautonomia in the autonomic nervous system, to shift a child’s nervous system out of sympathetic fight-or-flight and activate the vagus nerve and parasympathetic regulation that makes every other healing modality work better.

In 95% of the case histories I’ve taken, going all the way back through fertility, pregnancy, labor, delivery, and early childhood, I found the elements of The Perfect Storm adding up. The nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight, subluxated, with nobody having addressed it yet. That was why the healing and the progress had been limited.

“In 95% of case histories, some or all of The Perfect Storm adds up. The child’s nervous system is stuck in fight-or-flight, subluxated, and nobody has addressed that yet, which is why the healing and the progress has been limited.”

A PX Docs office does three things that no other provider does together: a deep individual case history that goes all the way back to fertility, pregnancy, and birth; INSiGHT Scans that measure and quantify the dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system, the only technology that can actually show you where the nervous system is out of balance; and a personalized neurologically-focused care plan built around what those scans show.

No matter what level, what severity, or what age your child is with autism, or if you’re listening with a mom gut that says “we’re heading in a direction I don’t want to go”, the action step is the same. That one step, getting the nervous system piece on the table, is what makes every other right thing you’re already doing actually work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually causes autism? Is it genetic?

Autism is not genetically predetermined. According to Dr. Tony Ebel, DC, CACCP, it results from The Perfect Storm, a sequence of compounding stressors during critical developmental windows: maternal distress during pregnancy, birth trauma at delivery, and early exposure to antibiotics and toxins. A child may have a genetic predisposition, but epigenetics research shows the environment during those sensitive windows determines whether and how that predisposition is expressed.

Why does my child’s gut inflammation persist even after we cleaned up their diet?

The Vagus Nerve is the primary pathway controlling inflammation and gut function, it transmits signals from every organ to the brain. When the vagus nerve is damaged or underdeveloped (which Dr. Tony Ebel sees in the vast majority of children with autism), it cannot activate the anti-inflammatory pathways needed to regulate the gut, regardless of diet. Dietary changes alone cannot fix a nervous system that was never able to regulate itself in the first place.

How is birth trauma connected to autism?

Birth trauma, from forceps, vacuum extraction, C-sections, or induction, physically stresses the Brainstem and Vagus Nerve at the most critical neurological intersection in the body. Dr. Tony Ebel has observed birth trauma in 85 to 90% of the children with autism he has seen clinically. Because the brainstem controls the autonomic nervous system, which in turn governs gut function, immune response, motor development, and behavioral regulation, birth trauma is, by his assessment, a bigger contributing factor than gut health, gross motor function, or genetics combined.

Why does my child seem stuck or plateau despite doing everything right?

Children with autism who plateau despite extensive intervention have often entered what Dr. Tony Ebel describes as neurological exhaustion, the third stage of subluxation and Dysautonomia, where the nervous system has been stuck in sympathetic fight-or-flight so long that it is simply worn out. The adrenals shut down, metabolism shuts down, and no healing modality can produce traction. The foundational fix, restoring nervous system balance through Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care, must come before other interventions can work fully.

Why does the order of healing matter so much for autism?

Dr. Tony Ebel’s central clinical finding: the order in which the body was driven into dysfunction is the order in which it needs to heal. The nervous system develops in a specific sequence. Birth trauma and maternal distress disrupt that sequence at the root. Addressing gut health, motor delays, or immune function before restoring neurological balance is like fixing the wiring while the power is still out. Getting Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care on the care team first, the foundational, often-missing step, allows every other intervention to produce better results.
