The Perfect Storm of Autism, ADHD, and Neurological Challenges in Kids

Episode 33 — Experience Miracles Podcast | Host: Dr. Tony Ebel, DC, CACCP — Pediatric Chiropractor & Founder of PX Docs | Published: August 13, 2024 | Duration: approx. 38 min

Key Takeaways

  • The Perfect Storm is a three-part framework — prenatal stress, birth trauma, and environmental toxins — that Dr. Tony Ebel, DC, CACCP identifies as the compounding root cause behind most childhood neurological conditions, including autism, ADHD, seizures, and sensory processing disorder.
  • Currently 1 in 4 children has a chronic illness, 1 in 6 has sensory issues, and 1 in 36 is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder — and all three trends are worsening because the underlying cause, nervous system dysregulation, is not being addressed.
  • Birth interventions — forceps, vacuum extraction, C-sections, and induction — appear in 85–90% of Dr. Ebel’s clinical cases involving childhood neurological conditions, because physical stress to the upper cervical spine and brainstem creates subluxation that shuts down the vagus nerve and drives sympathetic dominance.
  • Early symptoms like colic, constipation, chronic ear infections, and sleep problems are not conditions children grow out of — they are the nervous system expressing dysregulation that, if unaddressed, matures into ADHD, autism, and sensory challenges.
  • Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care works by addressing the four core systems — sleep, digestion, immune function, and gross motor development — before targeting the brain, because a body stuck in dysautonomia cannot allow neurological healing to occur.

What Is the Perfect Storm in Children’s Health?

The Perfect Storm is Dr. Tony Ebel’s clinical framework for understanding why so many children develop chronic neurological conditions like autism, ADHD, anxiety, and seizures. Rather than viewing these as separate psychiatric or genetic disorders, the framework identifies a single root system — the autonomic nervous system — and three compounding stressors that progressively compromise it: prenatal maternal stress, birth trauma from obstetric intervention, and early exposure to environmental toxins.

The autonomic nervous system controls everything relevant to a child’s development: digestion, immune function, sleep, motor coordination, and ultimately speech, socialization, and emotional regulation. When that system is pushed into sympathetic dominance — the body’s chronic fight-or-flight state — all downstream functions are disrupted simultaneously. This is why children with autism rarely have behavioral challenges in isolation; they almost universally also struggle with constipation, chronic illness, sleep dysfunction, and sensory sensitivity. The nervous system controls all of it, and the nervous system is the thing that went offline.

For parents, the critical shift this framework offers is this: the diagnosis is not the starting point for healing. The starting point is the nervous system, and specifically, tracing the Perfect Storm back through the child’s history to find where the dysregulation began. When that root cause is addressed through Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care, the four core systems — sleep, gut, immune, and motor — begin to come back online, and the neurological healing that parents have been desperately seeking becomes possible.

What Parents of Neurologically Complex Kids Are Living Through [00:00 – 05:00]

Dr. Tony Ebel, DC, CACCP: We found these answers because we knew parents were looking for them. When we took care of children with autism, ADHD, and seizures in our practice, we did what only doctors of chiropractic are designed to do to this degree: go all the way back in time to fertility, pregnancy, and early childhood to look for the cause.

Parents, if your child struggles with chronic, tough neurological challenges like autism, epilepsy, seizures, OCD, anxiety, ADHD, PANDAS, PANS, dysautonomia, POTS syndrome — if these challenges have been there for quite some time and significantly impact your family’s daily life — I bet these four things are true for your family.

You’ve exhausted the traditional medical system. You’ve gone to the pediatrician, neurologist, geneticist, and gastroenterologist. You’ve come out with more confusion, no answers, and especially no drug-free action steps that address the root cause and explain why your child is struggling in the first place.

You’ve been up late at night looking for answers, searching for the multi-factorial explanation of what’s causing this.

Maybe you’ve already moved forward on your own and done some incredible work. Perhaps you’ve found a functional, integrative, holistic doctor and implemented diet changes, detoxes, supplements, vitamins, essential oils, homeopathics, and herbs. You’ve likely thrown the natural health book at your child to try and improve their neurological, brain-based challenges.

And you’re looking for solutions — not just to get rid of the diagnosis. You love your child and know they’re made the way they’re made. You know that on the other side of their struggle is their best, fullest potential. You’re seeking help with those daily struggles, not just the diagnosis.

What we hear all the time is: “It was like you described my child and our journey word for word, step by step.” Another mom said, “When I first heard you explain all this, I finally felt hope once again. We finally had a sense of direction. We finally had a plan and a path we could take to get our child better.” And another mom said, “It all just made so much sense. I can’t believe that no other doctor — out of all the specialists we’ve seen — told me this or taught me this. It’s so simple and straightforward, which is what makes it so impactful.”

So let’s talk about what we’re up against. One in four kids today has chronic illness. One in six kids has sensory issues. One in 36 kids is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. These trends are all moving in the wrong direction. If I were to fast forward this video three years, those numbers would be worse — because the Perfect Storm is still brewing, and the traditional medical system and most of the information on the internet isn’t addressing it at all.

Why Everything Is Linked: The Nervous System as the Common Thread [05:00 – 12:30]

The first main point I want to make with this Perfect Storm concept is this: everything is linked together. This is why medicine struggles to make sense of autism. Autism is not a psychiatric disorder. It isn’t a purely genetic disorder. There’s a small genetic predisposition, but like all illnesses that don’t have actual chromosome or genetic changes, it’s an environmental Perfect Storm that takes a child’s genetics and skews them in the wrong direction.

Every child I’ve seen with autism clinically doesn’t just have behavioral, emotional, social, speech, and communication challenges — what we’ll call the brain-based challenges. One of the problems is that in the medical world, autism is viewed as a psychiatric condition, a brain-based condition. Even if it were, they think all psychiatric conditions like anxiety and ADHD are caused by either genetics or something inside the brain. But the brain works for the body.

There’s one system that connects everything together, foundationally: the central and autonomic nervous system. The nervous system controls the digestive system, the immune system, motor and proprioceptive function, motor tone and coordination, the vestibular system, and of course speech, communication, socialization, and behavioral and emotional regulation.

Medicine has become a collection of separate silos, with specialists looking only at their specific area. They don’t see the forest for the trees. All of these neurological conditions — especially autism — are interlinked to one system. The storm starts with the nervous system.

“Colic isn’t something that kids grow out of. They grow into tantrums. Sleep challenges don’t disappear — they persist because they have a neurological foundation.”

It really starts early. The signs of this are the things traditional pediatricians still dismiss: “Don’t worry, they’ll grow out of it.” Yet deep down, your gut feeling tells you it’s not okay that your baby is colicky, screaming, can’t latch or nurse, has torticollis or plagiocephaly, is constipated, gets chronic ear infections, develops eczema, and gets sick all the time.

It’s not normal for a baby to be stressed. It’s not normal for an 8 to 12-month-old or a toddler to be sick all the time. It’s not normal for them to need antibiotics. Antibiotics are a big part of this conversation, especially if given in the first two years of life.

Constipation doesn’t resolve on its own. Once constipation and microbiome disruption set in long enough and severely enough, it spills upward and affects the brain. A child can grow from constipation and eczema as a baby into ADHD, autism, and sensory challenges — especially if they’re put on antibiotics or Miralax, because these medications have side effects that are hallmarks of autism and ADHD.

Component 1 of the Perfect Storm: Prenatal Stress [12:30 – 15:00]

The first component we’ve seen clinically in case histories is a high-risk or high-stress pregnancy. This can disrupt and lead to imbalance within the development of the child’s central and autonomic nervous system.

The hallmark of all neurological conditions — from autism to sensory issues, ADHD, anxiety, and seizures — is too much sympathetic fight-or-flight tone. This protective, high-stress side of the nervous system isn’t supposed to be very activated in children. Think of a baby: they’re supposed to eat, sleep, poop, relax, and be happy. When an infant is stuck in sympathetic dominance, that manifests as colic, constipation, stiffness, arching, and crying. Later on in autism, when they’re stimming and walking on their toes, that’s the same neurology.

Often, this neurology first develops during fetal development. There’s solid research showing that maternal distress — prenatal distress and even fertility challenges — is highly interlinked with autism and neurological challenges. Stress stuck on mom’s nervous system can lead to stress in the baby’s nervous system. The umbilical cord brings oxygen and nutrients, but it can also transmit nervous system stress: cortisol, high levels of stress markers.

“Stress stuck on mom’s nervous system can lead to stress getting into baby’s nervous system. That umbilical cord brings oxygen and nutrients, but it can also bring cortisol and high levels of stress markers.”

The baby’s nervous system, especially in utero and in early stages, is most plastic, impressionable, and programmable. If there’s a lot of stress in that scenario — which often there needs to be if mom requires medical care — it affects the baby’s development.

Component 2 of the Perfect Storm: Birth Trauma [15:00 – 18:30]

The next component of the Perfect Storm is birth intervention and birth trauma. This is what we call the “moonwalking bear” — it’s there the whole time, but you can’t see it because of all the distractions. Medicine has normalized birth interventions like forceps, vacuum extraction, C-sections, induction, and epidurals.

What we know clinically — and what we’ve seen in 85 to 90 percent of our cases of kids with these neurological issues — is some documented, significant birth intervention that can lead to birth trauma and stress on their nervous system. The research supports this as well.

The more intervention that physically injures the brainstem — with the pliers or the plunger of forceps and vacuum, or the hands that yank and twist during C-section or manual assistance — creates what’s called subluxation: misalignment, fixation, tension, and neurological interference within the cranial bones, the upper cervical part of the neurospinal system, and throughout the whole system.

That system is designed to house and protect the entire central and autonomic nervous system, specifically the vagus nerve and the brainstem. The vagus nerve is responsible for rest, regulation, digestion, and communication. The upper cervical, brainstem, and cerebellum area controls motor planning, visual connection, and social and emotional communication and regulation. This area — the upper cervical spine and brainstem — is air traffic control for the entire central and autonomic nervous system.

“The upper cervical spine and brainstem is air traffic control for the entire central and autonomic nervous system. And for a child with autism, air traffic control doesn’t work.”

For a child with autism, air traffic control doesn’t work. The gut doesn’t work. The immune system doesn’t work. Their motor tone and coordination doesn’t work. Their speech doesn’t work. Their social-emotional regulation doesn’t work. Their sleep center doesn’t work.

Subluxation of that area shifts the child’s nervous system into what’s called dysautonomia, where the sympathetic nervous system is dominant and there’s too little parasympathetic — vagal nerve — tone. The nervous system can’t relax. It can’t soothe. It can’t communicate. It can’t regulate.

Component 3 of the Perfect Storm: Environmental Toxins [18:30 – 21:00]

When a child has had a stressful pregnancy and a traumatic labor and delivery, all these systems aren’t working properly. Then they get sick and — unfortunately — we still overuse and misuse antibiotics and medications instead of addressing the root cause. The same goes for environmental toxins: kids and chemicals don’t mix, whether ingested, injected, or inhaled.

These toxins take a child’s already stressed and wound-up nervous system and become the straw that breaks the camel’s back, leading to inflammation, regression, and worsening challenges.

This is tricky for families because you see the effects of these toxins, and it looks like that’s the target — it’s gluten, it’s dairy, it’s a specific medication. And that is a real and important part of the picture. But in 98 percent of cases I see, when children regressed after exposure to toxins, they were already on the Perfect Storm path. They already had a nervous system that was sympathetic dominant and out of balance.

When you’re in subluxation, sympathetic dominance, and dysautonomia, your child’s nervous system and overall health are less resilient and less adaptable. So when toxins enter a shutdown, less resilient system with a reduced ability to detox, it’s a one-plus-one-equals-eleven situation in a negative direction.

Fix the Body First: The Four Core Systems [21:00 – 26:30]

It all adds up to dysautonomia and dysregulation within the gut, immune system, and motor system. Here’s how development works: if the four basics — sleep, digestion (pooping), immune system (lymphatics, respiratory, and immune function), and motor system (gross motor specifically) — are not functioning properly, which are all run by the central and autonomic nervous system, then neurodevelopment for the brain is compromised.

If we alter motor function, especially gross motor function and development, and a child misses milestones or has delays, they’re on the path to sensory spectrum disorders, ADHD, and learning disabilities. Think about your child, whether they’re 7, 13, or 17 years old. What if those four major systems still aren’t functioning properly? What if they’re still not sleeping well, not having regular bowel movements, getting sick all the time, or their motor system is a mess despite all the PT, OT, and speech therapy?

We have to fix the basics. We’ve got to address these core four basic neurophysiological health and development functions before we try to fix the brain. Everything we do isn’t a treatment or a cure — we target the root cause and address it in a very specific, sequential order.

“You can’t fix the brain until you fix the body first.”

A lot of times, families will try intensives that involve lasers, primitive reflex work, and neurointegrative therapies. While the world is finally waking up to the importance of the nervous system, we actually need to simplify our approach to it. It’s remarkable how basic we can make it and still get results.

When we have patients with severe neurological challenges come to our clinic for intensives, we don’t focus on their brain, anxiety, or seizures first. We focus on their sleep, digestion, motor system, movement, posture, and neurospinal system — and we address these basics first through what we call Neurotonal Chiropractic Adjustments.

When you take care of the basics and improve the foundations of neurodevelopment and neurofunction, two things happen. First, your day-to-day life gets better. So many of the struggles with these conditions are about what you have to live with every single day — how difficult it is to get a haircut, brush teeth, fall asleep, go to the bathroom, and eat food. Quality of life goes through the roof with Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care for tough neurological conditions.

Second, once you’ve taken care of the basics, the brain can start to heal — because the body isn’t stressing it out and disrupting it so much. It’s really straightforward how much healing then begins to happen with speech, socialization, and emotional and behavioral regulation.

Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care and INSiGHT Scans [26:30 – 36:30]

Parents, you need to learn more about subluxation, dysautonomia, the vagus nerve, and nervous system dysregulation. I encourage you to visit pxdocs.com, watch our YouTube videos, register for one of our webinars or workshops, and get this information.

The last thing I need to tell you about is what we call our INSiGHT Scans. There’s incredible technology: three sets of scans that tell us exactly what’s happening in your child’s nervous system — without bloodwork, without an MRI, without the challenges of getting a sensory child to cooperate with traditional testing.

The first is the Neurothermal Scan, which measures neurological inflammation and interference. The second is the EMG — similar to an EEG or EKG — which measures neuro tone and motor tone challenges within the nervous system. The third is HRV (heart rate variability) technology, which measures vagus nerve parasympathetic versus sympathetic balance directly. HRV technology is going to change healthcare because the world is finally waking up to the importance of the nervous system.

What we call repairing and restoring the nervous system is different from meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and walking barefoot in nature. Those are great for maintaining neurological health, but children struggling with neurological conditions have a disrupted, dysfunctional nervous system. They need neurologically focused chiropractic adjustments. This is a different kind of healthcare — and a different kind of chiropractic. You’re looking for a nervous system-focused pediatric and neurological specialist.

I know I’ve given you a long, detailed explanation. But I also know that for many of you right now, you might have tears of hope because you’ve finally found someone to make sense of it all. You’ve got your hope back because you have the answers and explanations you’ve been looking for.

Stay in that emotion and turn it into action. Get a nervous system-focused pediatric and family chiropractor on your team. Be choosy. Be on the hunt. Make sure you get connected to a doctor who can do this work for you.

You are the hero in your child’s story. I know there are many nights where it feels like the answers and the doctors who will finally get you out of this storm are nowhere to be found. I believe they’re called PX Doctors. Every kid counts. Every kid can and will heal when we do things in the right order, addressing the root cause. God bless. Be well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Perfect Storm and what causes it?

The Perfect Storm is Dr. Tony Ebel’s clinical framework describing how three compounding factors — prenatal stress, birth trauma, and environmental toxins — progressively disrupt a child’s autonomic nervous system, leading to conditions like autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and seizures. Rather than a single cause, it’s a cascade: each stressor makes the nervous system less resilient, setting the stage for the next. Addressing the Perfect Storm means working backward through this sequence to find and correct the root neurological disruption.

Can birth trauma cause autism or ADHD?

According to Dr. Tony Ebel’s clinical observations — representing 85–90% of his cases involving childhood neurological conditions — some form of significant birth intervention (forceps, vacuum extraction, C-section, or induction) is present. These interventions can create subluxation in the upper cervical spine and brainstem, disrupting the vagus nerve and pushing the child’s nervous system into chronic sympathetic dominance and dysautonomia. This neurological state affects digestion, sleep, immune function, motor development, and eventually speech and emotional regulation.

Why won’t my child grow out of colic, constipation, or sleep problems?

Dr. Tony Ebel explains that these early symptoms are not developmental phases — they are the nervous system expressing dysregulation. Colic doesn’t resolve into normal development; it matures into tantrums. Constipation doesn’t disappear; it escalates into microbiome disruption that affects the brain. Sleep dysfunction persists because it has a neurological root. When treated with medications like antibiotics or Miralax rather than addressing the underlying nervous system dysfunction, these conditions can compound into ADHD, autism, and sensory challenges.

What is subluxation and why does it matter for my child?

Subluxation refers to misalignment, fixation, tension, and neurological interference within the neurospinal system — particularly the cranial bones and upper cervical spine. When subluxation occurs in the upper cervical and brainstem area — often from birth trauma — it disrupts what Dr. Tony Ebel calls “air traffic control” for the entire central and autonomic nervous system. This shuts down the vagus nerve, drives the nervous system into sympathetic dominance, and compromises every system the vagus nerve governs: gut function, immune response, sleep, motor coordination, and emotional regulation.

What is Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care and how is it different from regular chiropractic?

Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care is a specialized clinical approach that uses Neurotonal Chiropractic Adjustments to restore balance to the central and autonomic nervous system — specifically targeting the brainstem, upper cervical spine, and vagus nerve. Unlike general chiropractic, it’s guided by INSiGHT Scans (Neurothermal, EMG, and HRV technology) that measure neurological inflammation, motor tone, and vagus nerve function directly. The approach is sequential: sleep, digestion, immune function, and motor development are addressed first, before targeting higher-level neurological functions.
